A petition has been started encouraging Mayor Oscar Leeser to order body cameras for police officers.

According to the petition at change.org, the President has requested 263 million dollars to equip police officers across the country with body cameras.  Nbcnews.com reported that the program, if approved by Congress, would:

offer a total of $75 million over three years to match state funding for the cameras by 50 percent, helping to pay for more than 50,000 of the devices.

The change.org petition hopes to get Mayor Leeser to obtain some of those cameras for local officers.

The general idea seems to be that cameras worn by officers will protect citizens from officer misconduct and the officers themselves from false accusations and/or charges.
