Week three of high school football in El Paso is already in the books! Let's check out the coverage from over the weekend:

Riverside holds on against Clint, 24-23

By Angel Torres

The Clint Lions traveled to face the Riverside Rangers at Tom Work Riverfront Stadium and fell just short of getting their first win of the season in a thrilling 24-23 game that came down to a last-second field goal.

Led by sophomore quarterback Carlos Rojas III, the Rangers jumped out to an early lead behind two of his touchdown passes, both going to wideout Ricardo Briones. Rojas III also ran for a 51-yard score, giving Riverside a 21-6 halftime lead. He would finish 11-for-26, 149 yards and two touchdowns. He would also rush for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Clint came out in the second half and didn’t squander the field position freshman Samuel Brown was able to set them up with multiple kick returns. Brown would also catch a 40-yard touchdown pass on a rare downfield throw. Their hard-nosed style running the triple option allowed Clint quarterback Brandon Quezada and the Lions to slow the game down and control the clock. A controversial safety allowed Clint to pull within striking distance.

After a few possession changes and with one second remaining on the clock, Clint trotted out freshman kicker Jayden Gines to attempt a 32-yard field goal. All the mechanics were correct, but defensive lineman Servando Avitia was able to block the kick and seal the game for Riverside in this heart-pounding District 1-4A opener.

Pebble Hills destroys non-district foe Americas, 63-14

By Adrian Broaddus

In a game that avenged last year's one-point loss, Pebble Hills came out victorious, 63-14, over non-district foe Americas. The Spartans scored 49 unanswered en route to the swift win.

At one point, this game was 14-14. Then, Pebble Hills ran away with the game. Spartans senior tailback Zerian Quarles, who had over 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns, paced the game nicely for Pebble Hills. Sophomore quarterback Joe Fernandez threw for a touchdown pass and rushed for two scores.

Americas was led by quarterback Jayden Mendivil, who had a 75-yard rushing touchdown, and Cam'Ron Johnson, who contributed with a rushing touchdown.

The win marked the first under new head coach Ryan Warner for the Spartans (1-2). Meanwhile, Americas (0-2) is still looking for their first win of the season.

Canutillo soars over Burges, 34-10

By Sebastian Perez-Navarro

In their first district game of the season, the Canutillo Eagles showed up in a dominant fashion and defeated the Burges Mustangs, 34-10. The Eagles were led by a strong performance from senior running back Rene Huerta, who found the end zone twice. His first score was a 15-yard run, and his second came from a 40-yard reception accredited to senior quarterback Matthew Gasca.

City sensation Eduardo “Lalo” Carillo led the Eagles all around, punching in a Touchdown through the ground from 40 yards out. Carillo went on to show his dual-threat ability by intercepting junior Mustang quarterback Marcus Sanchez late in the second.

Late in the fourth, Burges senior running back Luke Dexter-Quinn ran in six points from 24 yards out, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Eagles from soaring away with their first district win.

Del Valle’s Fette shines in win over El Paso High, 62-6

By Brandon Cohn

Del Valle proved why they are one of the top teams in the city on Friday night with a stellar performance over district rival El Paso High. The Sun Cities’ best D1 prospect, QB Jake Fette continued to shine by leading his team to a dominating 62-6 victory.

The Tigers blinked and were down 42-0 at the intermission. Fette, who was 15-of-19 for 236 yards, tossed 3 touchdowns in the opening half. After putting on a show for fans, he did not play in the second half. Throughout the evening Del Valle scored on virtually every possession.

ASU head Coach Kenny Dillingham, as well as SMU quarterback coach D'Eriq King, were in attendance to watch perfection firsthand. Del Valle’s stifling defense forced El Paso High’s QB Martin Gonzalez into throwing two interceptions and pressured him all night long.

In all the Conquistadors put on an offensive frenzy as three RBs (Rocha, Vizcarro, Eytchenson) scored touchdowns, while WRs Estrada and Nunez accounted for three TD’s.

El Paso High (1-2, 0-1 in 1-5A DII) will attempt to regroup after a bye before hosting Canutillo on September 27, while Del Valle (2-0, 1-0 in 1-5A DII) will travel to Canutillo next Friday in a showdown.
