This Texas Woman Just Retired After 54 Years at Whataburger
Everyone has their first job stories that they look back on and think “Wow what a time” then continue on with their current new job. Well, for one Texas woman, that first job turned out to be her first AND last job AND it’s even the place where she would meet her lifelong partner.
Prepare the tissues because this precious story will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions!
It was Love at first Bite:
After 54 incredible years, Connie Claxton finally hung up her apron at Whataburger, leaving behind a legacy as legendary as the burgers themselves.
Connie’s journey with Whataburger began in 1970 with what she calls "love at first bite." That first burger had her hooked, and she knew right then, "I could do that." And she did—for over half a century!
From slinging junior burgers (which she still eats every morning) to serving up smiles, Connie’s dedication never wavered.
Working at 10 different locations over the years
Connie spent the longest stretch—18 years—in Terrell, Texas. It was there that she met her future husband, a regular customer with a special needs son. (Cool, and now I’m crying so early in the morning!)
“He was so kind to him,” Connie recalls. “I thought, ‘Man, what would it be like to be married to him?’” They shared three decades of marriage until his passing 11 years ago. (WHY AM I CRYING EVEN MORE NOW?!)
A Whataburger retirement party like no other:
Despite the ups and downs, Connie’s commitment to Whataburger was unwavering. But on Wednesday, she knew it was time. “Thank you, Jesus, for letting me do it one more day,” she thought before her final shift.
Whataburger celebrated her retirement with a heartfelt party, but for Connie, it’s been a blessing. “I just thank the Lord every day,” she said with a smile.
