Some in Texas may use the sweetener known as Xylitol. Recent data however, may cause some in the Lone Star State to switch away from it. Here's what is known.

Xylitol And Issues Discovered By Cleveland Clinic Researchers

As reported by NBC News, data has been published by the European Heart Journal that has caused some concern. Xylitol, while it is produced in the bodies of humans, is also in various fruits and vegetables. It can also be used as an additive.

When it is used as the previously mentioned additive, it has the same taste as sugar. It can be found in items labeled as "keto-friendly," and other items such baked goods or toothpaste. However, the concerns come in from the previously mentioned study from the European Heart Journal.

It has been revealed that Xylitol has been found to have connections to cardiovascular-related deaths, increased risks of heart attacks, and stroke. To determine this, the European Heart Journal looked at levels of Xylitol in 3,000 individuals' bloodstreams.

The investigation began after the individuals refrained from eating overnight. Of the 3,000, those placed in top 25% Xylitol levels had their risks of death, heart attacks or strokes doubled.

Reaction To The Data

Per the Chair of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Sciences at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute, Dr. Stanely Hazen:

"We’re throwing this stuff into our food pyramid, and the very people who are most likely to be consuming it are the ones who are most likely to be at risk."

Hazen also suggested that individuals not eat or drink anything that has "itol" as its ending. As this is a developing story, we will have more information when it becomes avaiable.
