YISD To Let Voters Decide On $430 Million Bond

The Ysleta Independent School District will again put a group of big ticket school projects in front of voters this November. The YISD board voted yesterday to send a $430 million bond package to the ballot, despite failing to win approval for a slightly bigger bond measure earlier this year. If approved, the bond would increase tax bills for homeowners by $66 for every $100,000 of their home's value.

El Paso Sheriff's are searching for a sex offender who failed to return to the halfway house where he was staying. Christopher Guerra was given a pass to go to a job, but failed to return and is now wanted on a parole violation. Guerra was originally convicted of indecency with a child. Anyone with information on Guerra's possible whereabouts is asked to call the El Paso Sheriff's Department.

El Paso's largest hospital operator is getting a new name. The company previously known as Sierra Providence Health Network will now be know as The Hospitals of Providence. The rebranding of the company turns each of its hospitals into a "campus," with Providence Memorial becoming the Memorial Campus under the new brand umbrella. The same is true for the other hospitals in the network, as well as the upcoming teaching hospital set to open in a few years.

Baby Orangutan Makes Debut At Zoo

Khaleesi the orangutan is getting a lot of attention after her coming out party yesterday at the El Paso Zoo. The baby orangutan was born in April, but yesterday was the first time she could be seen in public. Zoo officials say Khaleesi is healthy and active, but will only be in public view for 2 1/2 hours daily. Viewing hours will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon daily.

Han To Fight For Women's Title In El Paso

Jennifer Han is finally getting the chance to fight for a world championship, and she will do it here in El Paso. Han announced yesterday that her International Boxing Federation title fight against Helen Joseph will be held on Sept. 19 at the Haskins Center. The bout has already been postponed once because Joseph was unable to obtain a visa, so Han said she was relieved the fight was finally and officially set. Han is ranked number two in the world behind Joseph, and they will fight for the vacant IBF women's featherweight title.
