Wife Of Former El Paso CBP Officer Arrested For Human Smuggling

The wife of a former Customs and Border Protection officer is now charged with aiding a scheme to smuggle illegal immigrants across the border. Odet Madrid Corchado was arrested Wednesday by Homeland Security and was then released on $10,000 bond. Madrid Corchado is accused of collecting bribes for her husband, former CPB supervisor Lawrence Madrid. Madrid is accused of being paid to allow illegal immigrants to walk across the Bridge of the Americas from Mexico to the U.S. without being stopped. The scheme was discovered by Homeland Security in January.

Children's Hospital Continues To Lose Money

El Paso Children's Hospital is making progress but is still losing a tremendous amount of money each month. In its latest report to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, the hospital reported it lost $1.76 million between the middle of June and the middle of July. That was an improvement of about $400,000 from the previous monthly report. The hospital declared bankruptcy in May and sued University Medical Center, saying UMC overcharged for services. UMC says Children's owes them over $100 million.

El Paso Police Announce Results Of Crackdown On Violent Crime

The El Paso Police Department is trying to crack down on violent crime in the northeast area of the city. Over the past two weeks, officers have made over 800 subject checks and around 400 vehicle checks, resulting in more than 100 arrests. Most of the arrests were for misdemeanors, though 40 were felony charges. The police department said it increased patrols in the northeast after a noticeable increase in violent crime in the area.

El Paso Still Has Most Expensive Gas In Texas

El Paso still has the highest gas prices in Texas, according to AAA. The latest numbers from the across the state show El Paso averaging nearly $2.52 a gallon for unleaded gasoline. However, gas prices are down about five cents from the same time last week. El Paso is well above the state average of $2.27 a gallon, which is down eight cents in the last week.
