Turns out there is a reason! A group of Dutch scientists (apparently, there's not much to do in The Netherlands these days) have answered the question that has plagued mankind for at least ....... well, when I first saw this story I started to wonder.

He's overheating!! According to the Dutch Brain trust,

“the exceptional physical burden of flying with a sleigh with Santa Claus as a heavy load,” which resulted in “cerebral and bodily hyperthermia” and an “overworked nasal cooling mechanism.”
