The biggest retailer in the nation, Wal-Mart, has filed a lawsuit against our wonderful state of Texas. But it's for a good cause in my mind.

Wal-Mart filed a lawsuit in federal court in Austin, Texas for the right to sell hard alcohol at stores connected with Wal-Marts in the state of Texas. Wal-Mart wants to start operating "package stores" right next to Wal-Mart stores, but this is apparently illegal in Texas. A company official said,

"provisions in the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code that prohibit Wal-Mart, and other publicly traded companies, from owning or operating package stores in Texas are unconstitutional. The state cannot create a barrier to free market competition and consumer choice."

There is another problem Wal-Mart has with the TABC code. Wal-Mart is forbidden from having more than 5 package store permits at a time. This could be an issue, especially since there are way over 5 Wal-Marts in the state. The lawsuit also says that certain "close family members" are allowed to be an exempt from this law, which is how companies like Spec's are able to operate, according to KXAN.

Some Wal-Mart customers are for this plan, while owners of liquor stores are not fond of the idea. They believe Wal-Mart will take over the state's liquor business, essentially pushing out the local liquor stores. What do you think? Do you think it would be bad for the state to have Wal-Mart selling liquor? Would it be better or worse? Comment below!
