Las Cruces Man Faces Prison For Child Pornography

A Las Cruces man has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for possession of child pornography.  Twenty-seven-year-old Abel Quiroz is a former U.S. Border Patrol agent who was arrested in April of last year.  Prosecutors say Quiroz confessed to receiving naked e-mail pictures of a 15-year-old girl.  He'll also be required to register as a sex offender after his release from prison.

Firefighters Will Vote On New Contract Offer

El Paso city officials are offering a compromise wage and benefits package to local firefighters.  City Manager Tommy Gonzalez says the latest offer includes an immediate pay increase for firefighters, but it also includes an increase in health insurance premiums.  Firefighters will vote on the new package over the next 10 days, but if no agreement is reached, voters in El Paso will settle the contract dispute in a special election May 9th.

Mayor Says Juarez Is Safer

The mayor of Juarez is bragging about the border city as he kicks off a new tourism campaign called "Juarez is Waiting for You."  Mayor Enrique Serrano says Juarez is a much safer city than it was just five years ago when it was known as the murder capital of the world.  In 2010, for example, Juarez averaged more than eight murders a day.   However, doubters point out Juarez is still averaging more than one murder a day.

UTEP Prof Works On Cancer Breakthrough

A UTEP professor says he's compiling a database that could help detect breast cancer earlier.  Professor Wei Qian says he's created a database from thousands of breast cancer patients, including M-R-Is, ultrasounds and X-rays.  As the database grows, he says it'll be easier to detect other forms of cancer too.  The professor says earlier detection can eventually allow cancer patients to live ten or 20 years longer.

NFL Releases Schedules For Dallas And Houston

The National Football League has released the Dallas Cowboys' and Houston Texans' schedules for the upcoming season.  Dallas will kick off the season at home against the New York Giants.  They'll play the Super Bowl Champion Patriots on the road October 11th and finish up the season at home against the Redskins.  The Texans start the season at home against the Chiefs and wrap up the season at home against the Jaguars.  They also play the Patriots in mid-December.

El Paso Runners Compete In Boston Marathon

Seven runners from El Paso are returning home after competing in the Boston Marathon this week.  The runners include four men and three women who all finished the 26-point-two-mile marathon.  German Trejo finished with the best time of all seven El Paso runners at three hours, 12 minutes and 16 seconds.  Lorraine Maiella was the fastest woman marathoner with a time of three hours, 46 minutes and 18 seconds.
