Let me say, first and foremost, Alzheimer’s scares the crap out of me. Seriously, it is one of my biggest fears (for me or anyone really). So that right there already put this movie up there on the scare scale for me.

Not even taking the Alzheimer’s factor into account, this movie delivers big time. From Deborah peeling off her forearm skin, to some well timed pop-up moments, The Taking of Deborah Logan has a good mix gross out and suspenseful moments.

I do think that the “shot on home video/documentary” horror movie has become not only a cheap way to make a movie, but also a cheap way to get a scare, but after about 10 minutes I stopped noticing it. On top of the typical horror stuff, there’s also a good story and small mystery to this movie which only adds to its appeal.

Analysis

  • Gross Out Factor — 5
  • Jump Factor — 7
  • Alcohol Pairing  — This is a good whiskey sipping movie. My whiskey of choice was Monkey Shoulder. Just make sure you are careful when you take a drink, there are a couple moments it might be coming back up your nasal passage.
