One of the big news stories over the weekend was obviously Trump calling NFL players who don't stand for the National Anthem "sons of bitches." Yup, continuing to keep it classy. And while it's really easy to get sucked into this blackhole of a debate, I'd rather take a step back and look at something else. That would be Trump sinking the USFL because of his own hubris.

The USFL was a league that ran from 1982 to 1986, meant to compete, although not directly with the NFL. And for a brief moment, it looked like it was going to be able to last right next to the NFL. Until Donald Trump started throwing his weight around and decided to go head to head with the NFL.

For some reason Trump was adamant about the league competing directly with the NFL. And maybe he harbors some ill will towards the league, which is why he is calling out players who protest "sons of bitches."

Basically, Trump wanted the USFL to go right up against the NFL during the same time of here. Here said:

"If God wanted football in the spring, he wouldn't have created baseball."

HERE is some things to know about Trump and USFL from ESPN. Long story short, Trump pushed the USFL to put it's schedule right up against the NFL. Trump and the USFL lost... badly.
