The First Super Moon Of 2019 Is Coming!

Get ready Colorado, the first Super Moon of this year will be the best!

It's known as a 'Super Moon' or in February the 'Snow Moon.' What sets this full moon apart from all the others is that it will be the biggest, brightest moon of the year! The event peaks on Tuesday night, February 19th. The moon will be the closest to Earth at only 221,734 miles away. That causes the Moon to appear up to 14% larger and up to 30% brighter!

The distance the moon is from the Earth changes because its orbit isn't a circle. It's more of an oval shape. When the moon is closest to the Earth, it's called "perigee." If the full moon phase coincides with the perigee, the result is what we call a 'Super Moon!'

Even though the full moon isn't officially until Tuesday, you don't need to wait for that night to catch it. The moon will appear extra bright and extra big from Sunday through Tuesday nights.
