Writer Daniel Vaughn says in his Texas Monthly article, "I’ve had better luck locating kolaches in New York City than I have finding good barbecue in El Paso, Texas."

First of all, I'm sure there are plenty of places to get good kolaches in New York if you know where to look.

Secondly, I'm a big fan of some El Paso barbeque joints. State Line and Rib Hut, two of my faves, are two that Vaughn dismisses as inferior. I've had barbeque in St. Louis, Memphis and Austin. What can I say? I like it all!! I can't ever remember having bad barbeque. Does that make me some kind of barbeque philistine, bereft of the taste sense that God granted more discerning connoisseurs?

I've had Salt Lick and thought it was great. But, I've never felt like I'm living in a "barbeque desert".  Vaughn makes it sound like El Paso barbeque is several steps below inedible. Really? Because, as far as I know, County Line Restaurants are very popular in the rest of Texas, the Holy Land of BBQ according to Vaughn, and I can't find much difference between County Line and State Line.
