Smashing Pumpkins have been going back and forth over the best way to release their upcoming album ‘Oceania.’ Now comes word that there is a game plan, which Billy Corgan will announce the details of at next week’s South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

The Smashing Pumpkins have had their upcoming album ‘Oceania’ in the can for months now but have stalled releasing the disc to come up with an effective release strategy. Initially it was reported that the disc would be available online for free — similar to their ongoing 44-song project ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’ — but then ‘Oceania’ seemed to be headed for a more traditional release. Corgan’s latest update seems to indicate that neither of those reports are completely accurate.

“Our aim is to turn the ‘social’ into a new way to experience an album,” Corgan tells Mashable. “By taking the medium one step further we will create an experience with ‘Oceania’ online and off-line that transcends the single and the single mentality in all ways.”

Corgan further explains that the band is working to revive “the album experience through fan engagement in a whole new way with Oceania. [We're] working closely with Superfans as gatekeepers to help interaction on a fan-to fan level by promoting their Smashing Pumpkins related blogs and enlisting their help in maintaining a few official Smashing Pumpkins social media sites.”

While Corgan isn’t ready to give all the details just yet, his publicist did hint that “we’re not releasing this record like normal at all. The key is that when we release the record, we’re not going to release single a viral video. You’re going to take the record a have a full online experience with it.” The Pumpkin-in-command will announce the release date and further details during at one of next week’s South by Southwest events.

‘Oceania’ will be Smashing Pumpkins ninth studio album and is considered part of the ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’ project — the band has referred to the release as an “album within an album” on several occasions.
