Police Arrest Temple Cop After Gun Fired At Convention

An off duty police officer from Temple, Texas, is free on bond after firing a handgun in an apparent fit of anger inside an El Paso hotel. Police say Kenneth Lee Sheka was inside the Chase Suites Hotel Tuesday night while attending the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas convention. Sheka was accused of inappropriately touching a woman as she walked by where he was standing. When the woman told him not to do it again, Sheka allegedly pulled out his handgun and fired it into a wall. Sheka was booked for suspicion of deadly conduct for firing the gun, and was released on $2,500 bond yesterday.

El Paso Connected To Three Mexican Cartels In New Report

A new report that probes the influence of Mexican criminal gangs in communities across the U.S. is tying El Paso to three drug cartels. The DEA's July report shows the Juarez and Sinaloa cartels with a significant presence in El Paso. But for the first time, the agency also identifies the Beltran-Leyva cartel as having a major influence. The DEA report says its intelligence is good as of May of this year, and calls the cartels identified "the greatest threat to the United States" due to their criminal activity.

State Senator Praises Landmark Conviction In Wage Theft Case

An El Paso lawmaker is praising what could be the first conviction in a wage theft case in the state of Texas. State Senator Jose Rodriguez says the sentence handed to El Paso contractor John Najera is important because the practice of wage theft is thought to be widespread. Najera was sentenced to probation, restitution and a $5,000 fine for failing to pay more than $2,000 to one of his employees. Rodriguez sponsored the 2011 law that made wage theft a crime.

Chihuahuas Fall 9-1 In First PCL Playoff Game

The El Paso Chihuahuas first-ever PCL playoff game didn't go as hoped yesterday. The Chihuahuas fell 9-1 to the home-standing Fresno Grizzlies last night. Fresno did most of its damage in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring seven runs. Will Middlebrooks got El Paso's only run of the game in the fifth with a solo homer. The two teams play again tonight in Fresno before the action shifts to Southwest University Park for game three.
