No Body Cameras for El Paso Sheriff’s Deputies – Yet
El Paso County Commisioners Court will not move forward on a bid for new tasers, body cameras and camera video storage.
The El Paso Times reported that Taser International Inc is asking $1.7 million dollars for:
97 tasers, 250 body cameras, and a five-year contract for data storage that will hold the body-camera videos, taser videos, the sheriff’s in-car videos, and any interview camera videos that the department collects.
$331,000 of that is an annual fee for the storage of video records. County technology officer David Garcia says that's cheaper for the city than paying for a storage system of it's own.
Taser's bid is a five year deal but, at the end of that term, the annual $331,000 storage fee would still be required. With that in mind, the city wants to wait until it's time to plan next years budget to decide if they'll accept.
