A 25-year-old woman and her baby veered off a bridge and into a freezing river.  No one saw the accident and the car sat upside down, hidden by the bridge, for 14 hours. When police finally approached the vehicle, they heard a voice saying "help me!"

Several officers heard the voice, causing them to rush to turn what they thought was just an abandoned car right side up.  The driver was dead but her 18-month-old baby was alive despite hanging upside down in her car seat all night, just above the freezing water.

Officer Jared Warner told Deseret News:

“We’ve gotten together and just talkin’ about it, and all four of us can swear that we heard somebody inside the car saying, ‘Help.'”

Officer Tyler Beddoes added:

“It wasn’t just something that was just in our heads. To me it was plain as day cause I remember hearing a voice. I think it was Dewitt who said, ‘We’re trying. We’re trying our best to get in there.'”

Beddoes added that the voice ‘didn’t sound like a child.’

The baby, who was treated for trauma and hypothermia, is expected to be fine.  A fundraising page has been set up to help the family.
