More kids in El Paso are getting free meals at school this year, thanks to a government program. The initiative does away with eligibility paperwork for individual families and allows schools to qualify for free meals based on statistics that apply to the whole school. When schools qualify under certain guidelines, the entire student body is eligible for the free meals. 55 schools in the El Paso ISD joined the program last year, and 35 schools in the Ysleta ISD and four schools in the El Paso ISD are joining the initiative this year.

A possibly suicidal man is under arrest after a standoff at an El Paso home last night. Police say they were called to the 8200 block of Lucky Drive to investigate reports of an armed man who may have wanted to harm himself. The man refused to come out of the home when asked, and SWAT officers were sent to the home. After two hours of negotiation, the man finally surrendered to police. Investigators say they are trying to determine if a woman found inside the home was being held hostage.

Video Of Ref Being Tackled Draws Response From El Paso Official

Video of two San Antonio area high school football players apparently tackling a referee from behind is getting a lot of reaction around the country, including El Paso. The president of the Texas Association of Sports Officials isn't commenting on whether the two San Antonio John Jay players hit the ref on purpose. But Rocky Ontiveros tells KFOX-TV that referees understand they can be hit during a play and that they are often defenseless when it happens. Ontiveros says El Paso based TASO will be meeting today to talk about the incident and whether any action needs to be taken to better protect local officials.
