El Paso Couple Faces Child Sexual Abuse Charges

Police have arrested an El Paso couple for sexually abusing two children.  Antonio and Sandra Huerta have been running a foster care home for several years, and police say they sexually abused at least two children who were in their custody.  Police say one of the victims was an eleven-year-old boy and the other was a 7 year old girl.  Prosecutors say the Huertas had more than 30 children in their custody over the past 14 years, and there could be other victims who may come forward.

Mayors Want Money To Save Military Bases

A group of Texas mayors is asking state lawmakers for $150 million for improvements to nearby military bases.  Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price says hopefully the extra money will make the bases less likely to be closed by the federal government.  The Naval Air Station near Fort Worth and Fort Bliss near El Paso are among dozens of military installations across the state that could face cutbacks or closures by the federal government.  Mayor Price says other states like Connecticut and Florida have already spent millions of dollars to protect their military bases from federal cuts.

Punching Victim Is In Critical Condition

A Las Cruces woman is listed in critical condition after being punched in the face and pushed out of a moving vehicle.  Police say the woman was unconscious in the road when they arrived on the scene.  The unidentified victim has been airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso with serious head injuries.  Meanwhile, police have arrested Rene Carillo on charges of aggravated assault and possession of cocaine.  His bond has been set at $50,000.

Teacher Support Fades For Local Bond Issue

Teacher support is apparently fading for a $450 million bond issue in the Ysleta School District.  Arlinda Valencia, with the teacher's association, says only 63% of local teachers now support the bond issue, compared to a previous survey showing support from 80% of teachers.  Valencia says some teachers may be upset because some areas in the school district will get twice as much money or more than other areas if the bond issue passes.

Eastwood Student Brings A Gun To School

Police are not releasing much information about a student at Eastwood High School who brought a weapon to school yesterday.  School district officials say security guards at the high school found an unloaded handgun in the student's backpack.  The school district reports no one has been threatened or injured at the school.  Police are investigating, but there's no word as to whether any arrests have been made.

Middle School Chess Team Wins National Title

Congratulations are in order for the chess team at Henderson Middle School in El Paso.  The chess team won first place in the National Junior High Championship tournament in Louisville, Kentucky.  The Hornets advanced to the national finals after winning the state championship in McAllen earlier this month.
