‘Man Of Steel 2′ Casts Ray Fisher As Cyborg

On the off chance that you still didn’t think Warner Bros. was using the sequel to last year’s Man of Steel to shotgun a Justice League movie franchise in an effort to keep up with the billion-dollar success of Marvel Studios’ Avengers movies, here’s a piece of news that should pretty much put that theory to rest: As reported by Variety today, Ray Fisher has been cast as Cyborg for the upcoming sequel to Man of Steel.

Fisher will be joining a Batman Vs. Superman cast that’s already pretty stacked, with Henry Cavill and Amy Adams reprising their roles as Hopeman Superman and Lois Lane, respectively, along with Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Godot as Wonder Woman.

Cyborg, originally created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez as part of the New Teen Titans in the ’80s, has been mostly identified with that team over the course of his superheroic existence. In fact, Victor Stone’s half-machine alter ego will be familiar to the non-comics-reading audience mostly from showing up on the Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go! animated series, where he’s voiced by Khary Payton.

Recent years, however, have seen Cyborg recast as a founding member of the Justice League, thanks to Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s “New 52″ reboot of the team in 2011. His appearance in the film, which already features fellow Justice League founders Batman and Wonder Woman (with rumors of Green Lantern showing up too), is a pretty strong sign that they’re going to be barreling towards a big-budget movie with the whole darn Justice League, dropping all their superheroic franchises into one Zack Snyder-helmed basket.

From a plot standpoint, this could also complicate things pretty severely. As it stands, we know that Lex Luthor is going to be involved, and there have been hints that at least part of the movie will be based on Superman and Batman’s conflict from The Dark Knight Returns (which, you know, is a great idea for the second thing Superman does), and if they’re also planning on introducing Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Gunfire, Starman I, II, and IV, Snapper Carr, Triumph, Guy Gardner: Warrior and the Primal Forces, well, that’s a lot to get through in two hours.
Fisher was also reportedly up for a role in the upcoming Star Wars sequel.
