Here in America, we call 911 whenever there is an emergency. Across the pond, they dial 999. An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from the police, fire department or ambulance. Examples include:

  • A fire
  • A crime, especially if in progress
  • A car crash, especially if someone is injured
  • A medical emergency, such as someone who is unconscious, gasping for air or not breathing, experiencing an allergic reaction, having chest pain, having uncontrollable bleeding, or any other symptoms that require immediate medical attention

There are bigger events going on in the world, like the dentist who killed a protected lion, and yet, this guy calls the emergency number because his cat ate the bacon. The man explains the emergency: 'Me girlfriend let me cat eat me bacon.' The operator then says, 'What would you like the police to do in regards to that, sir?'

You DON'T call 911 when you have a problem at a fast food restaurant or in this guy's case, because your cat ate your bacon.
