Las Cruces Detention Center Director Busted

It looks like someone just got caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

Dona Ana County Corrections Department Director Chis Barela was arrested early this morning in Las Cruces and charged with "embezzlement or fraud in the alternative" according to the Las Cruces Sun News.

Doña Ana County Sheriff Enrique "Kiki" Vigil said in an earlier news conference that a "white collar crime" task force busted Barela, and that he will also be facing additional charges. For now, the detention center has been taken over by the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department. In August, according to The Las Cruces Sun News;

Four grand jury subpoenas were filed in 3rd Judicial District Court in Las Cruces asking the county for several documents, including two internal affairs case files in which Barela was investigated for misuse of funds and missing gym equipment.

A second news conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. this afternoon.
