A Maverick County judge candidate was arrested after threatening to send a Mexican drug cartel after the county party chairman. Rudy Bowles, the Democratic candidate in the runoff for Maverick County judge turned himself in to police after he allegedly threatened the county party chairman, Luis Ruiz in a voicemail. In the voice message, Bowles demanded Ruiz give him a list of judges for each one of the precincts, saying he needed to know them right away:

"I need to know right away. If you don’t call me within 30 minutes, I am going to call the damn Zetas from across the river and they’re going looking for you, OK. Call me please, I don’t want to have to do that."

After receiving the message, Ruiz said he feared for the safety of him and his family and filed a police report. Bowles wouldn't respond to requests for comments but did put up a Facebook video that may have addressed the incident saying that he "like to joke around at times, but I do not in any way, shape or form belong to any violent organization."
