The HBO documentary "The Jinx" chronicles three murders allegedly committed by Robert Durst, the eldest son of a billionaire real estate tycoon.

Durst was popped for the murder of Susan Berman thanks to information HBO came up with while interviewing him for "The Jinx".  Over the course of the investigation(s):

  • An anonymous letter tipped off cops as to where Berman's body was and Durst himself said only the killer could have written it.  Handwriting experts testified that it's Durst's writing.
  • He fled after being accused of one of the other murders and, during the ensuing manhunt, was arrested for shoplifting. He had $37,000 in cash on him at the time.
  • During the interview, Durst said " Maybe I did do it… but you’ll never prove it.".

So how did HBO help?  Following the interview, Durst went to the bathroom and forgot he was wearing a live mic. While in the john, he practically confessed saying:

“There it is. You’re caught… What a disaster… What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”

As far as money goes, he's loaded.  When it comes to brains, notsomuch.
