An Alaskan woman decided after her husband died to take his body on a days-long traveling wake to see family and friends.

An elderly woman's actions in Alaska has law enforcement in the state shocked and scratching their heads to figure out if she broke the law.

The woman's husband died recently from natural causes and she received the body to take him to the mortuary. Instead, the woman decided to take him on a days-long traveling wake.

Police received a call around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday of last week from someone around the Potlatch Bar in Ketchikan, Alaska. When police arrived, they found an aluminum transport casket in the bed of the woman's pickup truck. Inside of the casket was the body of the woman's 78 year-old husband.

According to the Ketchikan Police Chief Alan Bengaard,

"The body was in that and supposed to be destined for the mortuary, but for some reason she decided to not go directly to the mortuary and had been driving around with him for a couple days... My understanding is kind of — leading up to the events of the last couple days — there’s been a rolling wake or viewing. It was pointed out to me that, evidently, she had stopped at a couple of the canneries and got ice and filled the bed of the truck with ice to keep the body chilled.... You can’t make this stuff up."

There no laws that state the woman couldn't take her husband's body around. The mortuary was given custody of the man's body and the family can make arrangements for his remains. The police chief added that he hoped the man's body wouldn't go on the road again.
