Former Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids guitarist Scott Mitchell Putesky, known by the stage name of Daisy Berkowitz, has revealed that he is currently battling stage-four colon cancer.

Putesky, who founded Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids with Brian Warner (aka Marilyn Manson) in 1989 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. is largely responsible for helping to drive the goth scene in Florida. The band was signed to Trent Reznor’s label Nothing Records, releasing ‘Portrait of an American Family’ in 1993.

The guitarist left the band in 1996, during the recording of ‘Antichrist Superstar.’ He continues to make music to this day through various projects, including a reported new endeavor called The Daisy Kids.

Putesky, currently two months into a six-month round of chemotherapy, told WLRN.org that after experiencing pains in his abdomen for over six years he ended up in the emergency room where a colonoscopy revealed that he had colon cancer.

The musician is keeping a positive attitude, even growing a rally mustache. “It represents my personal crusade,” he explained. “Cancer: Take my hair. Take my mustache. I challenge you. I still have my hair and mustache. So I’m winning.”

Local fans and friends in the industry have also rallied to support Putesky. They are throwing a benefit show this Saturday (Nov. 16) at Churchill’s Pub in Little Haiti, the spot where Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids played their very first show. A bevy of South Florida bands have signed up for the ‘Beat 4 Life’ benefit concert to help raise money to help Putesky pay for his cancer treatment. The event will also offer up artwork to be auctioned off to help support Putesky’s fight.

Putesky, currently undergoing his cancer care in Philadelphia, won’t physically be at the show but will undoubtedly be there in spirit. Fans in and out of the Florida area who want to get involved in the cause can find out more on the Facebook page created for the benefit show here.
