This is going to be an especially busy day for our state legislature.  Any House bills that aren't passed by midnight will be officially dead for the year.  That means lawmakers will be trying to speed up debate on bills they support and slow down debate on bills they oppose.  The midnight deadline applies only to House bills, not those that were initiated in the Senate.

El Paso Hoping For Hotel Incentives Bill

El Paso boosters are hoping for House passage today of a bill that would offer financial incentives to any company willing to build a hotel near the city's convention center.  They say a hotel would help El Paso attract more convention business.  The bill will die unless it wins House approval by midnight tonight.

White House, House GOP Funding Dispute

President Obama is pushing back against House GOP plans for funding the Transportation and Housing Departments.  The White House charges that the Republican version of those bills would cut $125 million dollars in funding for disadvantaged students here in Texas.  The White House also claims the Republican spending plans would cut job training services for nearly 174,000 Texans.

Former Juarez Police Chief Transferred To Mexico City

The former Juarez police chief who was shot last week is now being treated at a Mexico City hospital.  Julián Leyzaola Pérez was transferred yesterday, under police and military guard.  The two men who are accused of shooting him are expected to face formal charges today.

If you're planning a Memorial Day trip, you'll need to pack some extra patience.  Triple-A predicts 3 million Texans will be traveling over the upcoming holiday weekend and the vast majority of them will be on the highways.  That's a 5% increase over last year and it'll be our busiest Memorial Day weekend in a decade.  The long holiday travel period runs from May 21st to May 25th.
