Fatal Stabbing at Las Cruces Party

A 20 year old man was stabbed to death at a party in Las Cruces Friday night.  Police had already been called to the scene once before for noise coming from the party on El Centro, but were called back after reports that Carlos Contreras, known as Adrian, had been stabbed.  His brother said Adrian had gotten into a fight with three other men.  He was airlifted to the hospital but died soon after.

El Paso Groups Angry About Borderplex Report

The Borderplex Alliance released a report last week with recommendations for how to approve the area's economy, but some supposed collaborators are crying foul.  The Border Industrial Association was listed as a partner in the report, but members say they had nothing to do with the study and didn't want to.  An El Paso County Judge is also upset because the report lists the city as a partner in the report, but she said they didn't get enough input from area officials.  The Alliance paid an Austin-based economic research firm over $200,000 to compile the report.

Local Movie-Maker Shooting a Western in Town

A 39 year old local actor and director is making a movie in his hometown of El Paso.  Frank Powers said he loved spaghetti westerns as a kid and has now written his own.  "Brothers James: Retribution" is the story of two brothers who travel to the southwest to avenge their father's death and is set to be released next April.  A 17 year old graduate from Socorro High School is directing and acting in the film as well.

Memorial Medical Center to Stop At-Home Treatment

Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces has announced it will no longer provide in-home medical services to patients outside the hospital.  The Center's CEO said the business model of nurses traveling to patients' homes isn't sustainable anymore because of rising prices and a changing healthcare environment.  Services will stop June 30th, which means 30 employees will be out of a job and over 150 patients will have to find care somewhere else.

No Alcohol in Juarez on Election Weekend

It was a dry weekend in Juarez.  Sunday was election day in Mexico, and according to the law, that means no alcohol could be bought or sold starting early Friday and into Monday morning.  Some restaurants were reportedly offering free coffee and other drinks so as not to lose business during the election, during which 500 members of Congress will be elected.  The Juarez Chamber of Commerce also said some restaurants were offering discounts to people with proof they had voted.
