EPISD Under Investigation Again

The El Paso school system is the target of another investigation by the state education commissioner.  The "El Paso Times" reports the investigation focuses on "attendance and credit recovery issues."  Meanwhile, the paper says state officials have appointed Fred Liner to monitor the school system, as it transitions from a state-appointed school board back to having an elected board.

Senate Takes Up Vela's Border Bill

The U.S. Senate is considering a border security bill, sponsored by Texas Congressman Filemon Vela.  The measure would require the Defense Department to report to Congress on how drug violence in Mexico is affecting our national security.  Vela's bill passed the House Friday, as part of next year's National Defense Authorization Act.

Governor Signs Anti-Fracking Bill

Texas cities and counties are no longer allowed to ban the use of "fracking" when oil wells are drilled.  That's the effect of a bill Governor Abbott signed into law yesterday.  Fracking is the use of high-pressure liquid, to create underground cracks that allow oil to flow more freely.  Abbott says fracking is an issue that should be decided on the state level.

State Negotiating With New Exam Company

Someone new may be drawing up the standardized tests your child takes in school.  State officials are negotiating with a company called Educational Testing Service to take over the state contract, which is worth about 340-million dollars.  ETS would replace a company called Pearson Education, which has been responsible for the tests since the 1980s.

Las Cruces Teacher Gets National Award

A Las Cruces principal is being honored by her peers.  Central Elementary's Eloisa Solis has been named a "National Distinguished Principal," by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.  In addition to the recognition, Solis will get a trip to Washington where she'll be congratulated by the Secretary of Education.
