Here’s what’s going on in and around El Paso this weekend, August 15 – August 17, 2014. Some events are free, the others will cost you a few bucks:

FRIDAY:

Plaza Classic Film Festival – “The World’s Largest Classic Film Festival“featuring more than 80 movies of all genres. Actor Robert Wagner, best known for his television role on “Hart to Hart” will discuss his experiences while filming “The Towering Inferno” before its screening. Tonight's movies include "Purple Rain," "The Bad News Bears," and "Blue Velvet". Ticket prices vary depending on movie. More Details

El Paso Chihuahuas Baseball – El Paso’s Triple A team hosts the Nashville Sounds. Appearance by Breakin’ Bboy McCoy, plus the first 2,000 fans with paid admission will receive a team trading card set. Friday at the Fire – Live music by local bands set against the ambiance of the Freedom Crossing at Ft. Bliss outdoor fireplace. 6 – 11 p.m. FREE. This week, Sha'vonne.

El Paso Playhouse Presents ‘Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’ – El Paso’s longest running Community Theater presents the comedy play written by Christopher Durang about regret and sibling rivalry. Showtime is 8 p.m. at the El Paso Playhouse, 2501 Montana. Ticket prices vary. More Details

SATURDAY:

Farmer’s Market at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing – The “producers only” market features area farmers, backyard gardeners and artisans selling organic and pesticide-free vegetables, locally-made goat cheeses, natural free range chickens and eggs, native plants for home and yard, fresh-baked breads and salsas. 7:30 a.m. to noon. Downtown Artist and Farmers Market – The market offers the chance to shop for original arts and crafts and regionally grown produce in an outdoor setting while enjoying entertainment featuring local artists, food vendors and free activities for the entire family. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Union Plaza District (near The Garden Restaurant) along Anthony Street. Museum of Art Free Movie Screenings – The El Paso Museum of Art will screen a couple of movies at the museum in collaboration with The Plaza Film Festival. "FernGully: The Last Rainforest" at 1 p.m. and "Ice Age: The Meltdown" at 3 p.m. The El Paso Museum of Art is located downtown at 1 Arts Festival Plaza, across from the Abraham Chavez Theater. FREE, but seating is limited to the first 220 people. 532-1707

Gabriel Iglesias – El Paso’s favorite Hawaiian shirt wearing comic, fondly referred to as Fluffy, returns to the Sun City for one night only. 6 p.m. at the Socorro Entertainment Center, 11200 Santos Sanchez. Tickets are $25 or $10 SRO. More Details

Saturdays in the Park– Bring blankets, lawn chairs and a picnic basket and enjoy a different live band at various parks throughout the city. 6 -9 p.m. This week, Los Traques performs at Grandview Shelter, 3134 Jeffeson. More Details

The Fountains at Farah Sunset Sounds – Local and regional band perform in The Promenade at the Fountains for “sunset’ shoppers,” weather permitting, from 7pm to 9pm. Blankets and lawn chair encouraged, food and beverages available. This week, Mama Crystal and the Horns of Plenty . More Details

Warrant Concert - The hard rock band best known for their hits “Heaven” and “Cherry Pie” performs an 18 and older show 8 p.m. at Speaking Rock, 122 South Old Pueblo Road. FREE. More Details

The Doubletree by Hilton presents Saturday Night Movies on the Terrace – You don’t have to be a guest in the hotel to enjoy the movie. Tonight, “A League of Their Own”. 8:30 p.m., weather permitting, on the Sunset Terrace located on the 7th floor of Doubletree Hotel, 600 N. El Paso St. in downtown El Paso. District 3 Movies Under the Stars – Bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks and watch a movie in the park, weather permitting. This week’s movie is “Planes”. FREE. 8:30 p.m. at Hidden Valley Park (Cowboy Park), Granite St.

Horizon City Movies in the Park – Relatively current movies shown on an inflatable screen, weather permitting. Blankets or lawn chairs allowed and you can bring your own snacks or purchase concessions from the Horizon City Police Explorers, but alcohol is prohibited. This week’s movie is “The Lego Movie″. SUNDAY:

KLAQ BBQ – Finger lickin’ and guitar pickin’ highlight the 29th annual event that includes barbecue, rides and live music. 3 to 11 at Western Playland, 1249 Futurity Dr, Sunland Park, NM. Tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door. More Details
