El Paso Fire Rescues Two From Vehicle In Water At Ascarate Park

Two people are recovering after their vehicle wound up in the water at Ascarate Park overnight. El Paso Fire says six divers were dispatched to the scene to rescue one person who was trapped in the vehicle and had to be rescued. The driver was able to escape the car without help. Both driver and passenger were transported to the hospital, though their condition has not been released.

El Paso Man To Spend 20 Years In Prison For Fatal Crash

An El Paso man will spend 20 years in prison for a 2014 chain reaction crash that killed one person and injured several others. Brian Gamero was sentenced to 20 years for intoxicated manslaughter yesterday. Gamero was the cause of a crash on Zaragosa Road in April 2014 that claimed the life of Crystal Saldana. Gamero also received 10-year prison sentences for assault and possession of cocaine, but will serve those terms at the same time.

Lawmakers To Revise City Taxi Codes

City officials are looking to revise El Paso's current taxi ordinance due to the increasing use of online services such as Lyft and Uber. At a meeting yesterday, lawmakers discussed reworking the current city codes, which have been left alone for nearly 20 years. The review was prompted by local taxi companies who think it's unfair that services like Uber can take their business while not operating under the same rules. Officials hope to hold meetings with representatives from the taxi companies and the online services, in hopes of having new rules drafted by December.

UTEP Celebrates Third Consecutive Year In Magazine's Top 10 Ranking

The University of Texas at El Paso is celebrating its third consecutive year being ranked as a top ten school by one magazine. 'Washington Monthly' compiles a list similar to the better known national college rankings done every year by 'U.S. News and World Reports.' But the 'WM' ranking emphasizes social mobility, research and community service over exclusivity and educational cost. UTEP placed tenth this year, after ranking seventh two years ago and eighth last year.

Padres To Bring Big League Squad To El Paso For Exhibition

The San Diego Padres are holding a joint press conference with the El Paso Chihuahuas today at Southwest University Park. The Padres will reportedly announce they are bringing their big league squad to El Paso to play a spring training/exhibition game. The Padres are bringing out some big guns for the announcement, including owner Tom Siedler and CEO Mike Dee. The Chihuahuas have been a San Diego affiliate since 2014.
