The days of parking at meters downtown, for free, at night may be over soon.

The city of El Paso is reportedly looking at establishing a new entertainment parking district downtown.  An El Paso Times article says the district would charge a flat $5.00 meter fee in the evenings during certain events. Prior to 6:00pm, the meters would charge the usual, $1.00 per hour, fee. El Paso strategic project manager David Coronado told the EP Times:

“We are not proposing all of Downtown, just a small section,” Coronado said. He added that creating the district would ideally draw more visitors to Downtown who would stay longer during events to shop or have dinner, as well as attend an event.

“It would encourage people to stay Downtown.”

Taking away "free" and replacing it with a $5.00 fee doesn't sound like a great reason to head downtown to me. You?
