Driver Arrested After Passenger Dies In Ascarate Park Crash

One man is dead and another under arrest after an allegedly intoxicated driver crashed his car into Ascarate Lake late Tuesday night. Police say Diego Gamez drove into the park about 11 p.m. as workers were closing it. Gamez allegedly sped down the Thomason Loop before failing to make a turn and managing to roll the car into the lake. Passenger Angel Omar Sanchez was trapped in the vehicle and could not be revived. Gamez has been arrested on suspicion of intoxicated manslaughter and remains in jail on a $100,000 bond.

Vinton To Rely On El Paso County For Law Enforcement

A small village near the New Mexico border will rely on El Paso County sheriff's deputies to help keep peace in the community starting in October. Aldermen in the small town of Vinton voted to dissolve their police department yesterday because of budget issues. Officials say the village is facing a nearly $150,000 budget deficit and is trying to bring water and sewer to the entire community. The county already has a patrol unit committed to the area.

El Paso TV Stations Back On Dish Network

Two El Paso TV stations are back on the Dish Network after reaching an agreement on retransmission fees. Dish removed dozens of Sinclair Broadcasting stations from the satellite network Tuesday, including KFOX and KDBC. However, both sides reached a tentative agreement yesterday and have signed a two week extension to work out the details. Dish also asked the FCC to drop its complaint that Sinclair had not negotiated in good faith.

Child Health Fair Saturday In El Paso

Texas Tech University Health and El Paso First Health Plans are teaming for a children's health fair this Saturday. The Super Hero Health Fair is free, and will allow parents to get medical checkups for their kids. Sports physicals will also be available. The health fair runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the University Health Sciences Center at 4801 Alberta Avenue.
