Dexter Series Recap: SPOILER ALERT [PHOTOS]

Goodbye, Farewell and Amen.

Last night was the series finale of Dexter. I have been a faithful viewer and even got Dubba G hooked on it as well. Honestly, out of all the shows I have ever watched, Dexter (and M*A*S*H) are the only shows I will miss as a relative I will never see again. So I thought it would be great to review all eight seasons (apart from watching them all over again later).

Season 1: The Ice Truck Killer

We are introduced to Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a Forensic Analyst from the Miami Police Department and a serial killer who controls his 'needs'. His father, Harry Morgan (James Remar), who is now dead, lives in Dexter's imagination and gets him through life. His sister, Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) is doing everything possible to be Detective. The bodies of drained / cut out prostitutes begin appearing in different spots with personal relevance to Dexter's childhood. Debra while investigating the Ice Truck Killer has a relationship with Doctor Rudy Cooper (Christian Camargo) (who is the ITK). Within time, Dexter recognizes Rudy as Brian Moser, his long lost brother who also witnessed their mother's (Laura Moser) death. Brian wanting to be back in Dexter's life, kidnaps Deb and invites Dexter to kill her together. Dexter kills Brian and makes it seem as a suicide.

Season 2: Bay Harbor Butcher

Debra after almost being killed by the Ice Truck Killer, is staying with Dexter (she drives him mad). Some scuba divers discover Dexter's victims in the bay in black hefty bags. FBI Special Agent Lundy (Keith Carradine) is sent to Miami to investigate the case. After Dexter drugs Rita's ex-husband Paul (in protection of Rita, Cody and Astor), lands him in jail, he tries his best to convince Rita (Julie Benz) that Dexter framed him. He ends up being killed and Rita wonders why Dexter did what he did. He tells her he has a drug problem so she doesn't think anything 'worse'. He agrees to attend Narcotics Anonymous where he meets Lila Tournay (Jaime Murray), a pyromaniac who becomes Dexter's sponsor. Dexter at the same time, tries to get Doakes (Erik King) to back off as he suspects Dexter has some big secret (apart from the serial killer one). Dexter ends up framing Doakes as the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter finds out one of his mother's murderers is living in West Palm Beach and he heads over there with Lila. Lila begins to show her obsession for Dexter. As Doakes discovers that Dexter is the BHB, Dexter kidnaps him and keeps him in a cabin, Lila follows Dexter and kills Doakes as she says Dex and her are soul mates. Dexter ends up getting back and putting things good with Rita and kills Lila in Paris. (Yay - I never liked her.)

Season 3: Miguel Prado / The Skinner

Rita discovers that she is pregnant and Dexter proposes, finally accepting (it took a few tries). Dexter after one of his killings (Freebo), ends up killing someone else in self-defense, Oscar Prado; the brother to Assistant District Attorney, Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits). Dexter wanting to complete his task, kills Freebo as Miguel Prado witnessed. They become "BFFs". Little by little Dexter starts to show Miguel 'The Code". In the meantime, Miami Metro is dealing with a new serial killer, 'The Skinner'. Deb begins to date Quinn's informant, Anton Briggs (David Ramsey). Miguel Prado, even after Dexter said no, kills Attorney Ellen Wolf (his competition). Dexter seeing Prado's true colors, ends up killing Miguel and confessing to his brother's murder. Dexter is kidnapped by the skinner, but then sets himself free, but shatters his hand. He snaps the skinners neck and throws him in front of a police car so it seems as a suicide. In the last episode, he finally weds Rita.

Season 4: Trinity Killer

Dexter and Rita have a baby boy, Harrison. The Trinity Killer strikes again as he kills in 3s. Special Agent Lundy, now retired has been following the Trinity Killer since it all began, comes back to Miami. Debra cheats on Anton with Lundy. On one night, after discussing among other things, about the Trinity Killer, on her way to her car, Debra and Lundy get shot ... Lundy dying on the scene. Debra then breaks up with Anton. In the  meantime, Dexter as Kyle Butler finds out who the Trinity Killer is, owner, family man, Church-goer Arthur Mitchell (John Lithgow); who seems like the perfect family man, but who really terrorizes his family. Christine Hill (Courtney Ford), who is later discovered that is Trinity Killers estranged daughter, a reporter, ends up dating Quinn (Desmond Harrington). During the investigation, Debra interrogates Hill, she confesses and apologizes to Deb for shooting her and Lundy and shoots herself in the head. Cody and Astor head up to Disney with Rita's parents, as Rita was to head up north for a honeymoon trip. Dexter was to catch up with her, but first gets the satisfaction of killing Arthur Mitchell. Dexter heads home to pick up his bags, ends up hearing Harrison cry as he finds Rita in the tub of blood with Harrison sitting in her blood in the bathroom floor.

Season 5: Lumen

Dexter during one of his 'kills' investigations, he discovers Lumen (Julia Stiles), a girl that was kidnapped by a group of men. Quinn is convinced Dexter has some sort of secret and gets suspended without pay. LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) and Batista (David Zayas) get married and ask Dexter to be witness. Debra and Quinn begin to date as well. Dexter helps Lumen find and kill her kidnappers one being famous Jordan Chase (Jonny Lee Miller).

Season 6: Doomsday Killers (DDK)

LaGuerta becomes Captain after blackmailing Deputy Chief Matthews (Geoff Pierson). (LaGuerta and Angel are divorced now.) Debra Morgan becomes Lieutenant (as per Matthews, because LaGuerta didn't want her, she wanted Batista) Mike Anderson (Billy Brown) is hired by Deb as her replacement. Jamie, Batista's sister becomes Harrison's babysitter. Professor James Gellar (Edward James Olmos) and his student Travis Marshall (Colin Hanks) are suspected as the DDK - following the end of the world Book of Revelations. Travis kidnaps Harrison and Dexter discovers that he killed Professor Gellar a while back. Dexter gets Harrison back and as he kills Travis, he sees Debra saw everything.

Season 7: Isaak Sirko / Hannah McKay

Mike Anderson gets killed by Viktor, a Ukrainian. Isaak Sirko (Ray Stevenson) (his lover) will stop at nothing to find out who killed him and have him dead. At the same time, Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski) brings some information to the table that reopens an old case. After she confesses to Dexter the truth of her being involved in the murders, he makes her his next kill, unfortunately, things take a turn and he falls in love with her. Sirko then kidnaps Hannah and makes a deal with Dexter for him to find who is trying to kill him and take care of it, in exchange for Hannah and Dexter's 'ok'. Sirko gets killed just as he and Dexter were beginning to get along. Dexter turns Hannah in and she manages to escape.

Season 8: Brain Surgeon / The End

Psycho Specialist Vogel (Charlotte Rampling) helps investigate the "Brain Surgeon". She confesses to Dexter that Harry came to her for help and she is the one that came up with "The Code". Hannah comes back married. She seeks Dexter so he could kill him as he is dangerous to her. They end up getting back together. Dexter assumes he killed the Brain Surgeon, but then it turns out Vogel's supposed-dead son, Saxon is the killer. Saxon ends up killing Vogel and shoots Deb. Debra helps Hannah hide out in her house as she is Wanted. Dexter and Hannah plan to leave to Argentina together with Harrison. He quits Miami Metro and begins to head their way several times as Dexter didn't want to leave unless Saxon was dead. Dexter catches him and leaves him for Deb. Harry then tells Dexter this is it for them. That Dexter has now reached that point in his life where he doesn't need him anymore. He gets loose by a US Marshall, he gets killed and Debra gets shot. Dexter and Deb have a talk and he is told she'll be okay. He tries to leave once more, but heads back to the Hospital, having Hannah and Harrison leave to Argentina. He finds out Deb had complications and is now brain dead. Saxon is caught. Dexter kills him in a planned - self defense - scenario. He then heads to the hospital, takes Debra out of life-support. He takes her with him on his boat, he drops her in the ocean and fakes his death. Hannah, now in Argentina with Harrison, reads in the news that Dexter died in the ocean.

In the end, we see Dexter has become a mountain man. He has moved away from everyone and everything he ever loved. With Debra dying, as for him this is punishment enough. Suicide is too easy.
