Abbott: Same-Sex Marriage Won't Get Special Session

A special session will not be held on same-sex marriage.  Governor Greg Abbott tells San Antonio's WOAI that lawmakers did their job and don't require any overtime.  The Texas Legislature recently finished their 140-day session but social conservative groups are asking Abbott to bring them back for a special session.  These groups are asking that legislation be passed prohibiting Texas county clerks from issuing same-sex marriage licenses.

New Primary Care Clinic Approved

More than $600,000 in spending is being approved to build a new primary-care facility in Central El Paso.  The County Commissioners Court approved the spending to purchase land for the facility yesterday.  The facility will be built just down the Street from University Medical Center and include family practice, pediatrics, a pharmacy and more.  The Central El Paso clinic is just one of a few clinics UMC plans to add throughout the city.

Breakfast Drive Provides Plenty Of Cereal

A breakfast drive is helping feed lots of families this summer.  The "Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive" was held recently by the Providence Children's Hospital.  Officials told the "El Paso Times" yesterday that the drive collected nearly 90,000 servings of cereal, comfortably passing their goal of 50,000 servings.  The "Times" says the process will be donated to the El Pasoans Fighting Against Hunger Food Bank.  The cereal drive last year was able to provide about 35-thousand servings.

Early Voting For District One Runoff Ends Today

Early voting for the District One runoff ends today.  It is the final chance for voters to cast their ballots before the runoff election this Saturday.  "The El Paso Times" says only a fraction of the more than 46,000 voters in the West Side district have turned in ballots as of last Saturday.  The early voting sites open at 7:00 a.m. and will remain open until 7:00 p.m.

Abbott Signs Bill Lifting Hair Braiding Regulations

Hair braiding regulations are being lifted in Texas.  Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill yesterday, no longer requiring hair braiders to hold a license while running a braiding business.  "The Texas Tribune" says hair braiders used to have to go through the same training and facilities requirements as cosmetologists and barbers before Abbott signed the bill.
