The Chamizal National Memorial is celebrating 50 years as a National Park.

The Chamizal Memorial commemorates the resolution of the last United States boundary dispute. It was settled in 1963 with the Chamizal Convention Act and a few years later, in 1966, part of the area in question became one of the first National Parks ever.

The Chamizal Convention peacefully resolved a 100 year-old border dispute. Chamizal National Memorial Superintendent F. Gus Sanchez told the EP Times:

“As a nation, the site can still remind us, if we work hard and are thoughtful, … we can work through diplomatic means to come up with a great solution in the end.” “People from different countries were saying, ‘This is our land.’ We managed to solve all of that without going to war and in a way that was positive for both nations.”

The park is asking past and present area residents to share their stories about the Chamizal for an oral history exhibit. A "birthday party"... with cake and everything ... is scheduled for tonight at the museum, 800 S. San Marcial. For more information, call (915) 532-7273 or click here.
