There's been no opposition to declaring the Range a National Monument and over 1 million dollars has been raised to do so yet, the Obama administration said no.

On the upside, Castner Range will be preserved against commercial development and cleaned up, (to allow public access!), by the Department of Defense and the Bureau of Land Management. Representative Beto O'Rourke told the El Paso Times that:

“We have a letter that not only commits the Department of Defense and the Bureau of Land Management not only to preserve Castner, but open part of it.”

Frontera Land Alliance executive director Janaé Reneaud Field said “It’s disappointing that after 40 years with no opposition, with more than $1.3 million sitting there, with the historical values… that it hasn’t been declared a national monument.” Frontera's primary goal, preserving the range, was attained though!
