Bikes are awesome but, like all vehicles, they do break down.  Do you have enough cash on hand to fix yours?

A recent Consumer Reports study looked at over 12,000 motorcycles to determine average repair costs. First, here's a breakdown of common repairs and what percentage of work was related to each:

  • Electrical system 24%
  • Accessories 19%
  • Brakes 18%
  • Fuel system 13%
  • Clutch 8%
  • Body panels 6%
  • Drive system 6%
  • Valvetrain 5%
  • Front suspension 5%
  • Cooling system 4%

Now for the average cost of repairs. They varied by brand, type of bike, etc and ranged from a low of $269 (Kawasaki) to a high of $455. (BMW)  The median amount was $342 so a fair rule of thumb is, no matter what you ride, keep about $400 stashed for repairs.
