The Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff, in the comics is of Roma descent, historically known as gypsies. She is also half Jewish. Her past as a holocaust survivor is important to her history and her storyline in the comics. In the new Avengers movie, there had been rumors that director/screenwriter Joss Whedon was going to be changing characters heritage in his interpretation and that Scarlet Witch may be one of those changes. Now, we know that this is true.

Joss Whedon has cast Elizabeth Olsen to play the part of the Scarlet Witch. Many diehard comic fans are up in arms over the casting because Olsen is a blonde haired, blue-eyed girl to play the volumptous brunette Scarlet Witch. She will also be British in the movie. This means that her brother, Quicksilver, will also be of British descent instead of a Jewish, Roma man. Some fans are saying that Whedon has "white-washed" Marvel superheroes, getting rid of the minorities and having an all white cast.

Not on is the heritage of the Scarlet Witch an issue, but her powers and family lineage may have to be changed as well. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are both the children of Magneto, but since his character is being used in the Twentieth Century Fox version of X-Men, their characters will have to change. Both will most likely not be mutants, or Magneto's offspring. Their powers can stay the same but the title of "mutant" will most likely not be used.

What do you think? Is it a big deal that they are drastically changing so much of the character? Or are you just happy to see the characters being put into the movies?
