Metallica are behaving like Santa this holiday season, generously doling out previously unreleased songs from the ‘Death Magnetic’ sessions. They are essentially sonic presents! The latest new-yet-old song is ‘Hell and Back,’ which dropped last night after the band performed the song at its third (of four) anniversary show underplays for fan club members at the Fillmore in San Francisco. It’s ‘Tallica’s 30th birthday but they are the one gifting fans with songs.
The lineup for the second annual DimeBash has been announced. The show is a tribute to the late, great guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott, who tragically was gunned down seven years ago today, Dec. 8, in Ohio while doing what he loved most: playing guitar. He was performing with his post-Pantera band Damageplan when a disturbed fan opened fire at close range and shot him.
Zakk Wylde is a guitar deity. He’s also a good sport, as he has agreed to be the roastee for Guitar World’s first-ever Rock ‘n’ Roll Roast. Wylde will sit in the hot seat and be subjected to good-natured barbs from fellow rockers, like his former boss Ozzy Osbourne, as well as Anthrax‘s Scott Ian and Slipknot / Stone Sour vocalist Corey Taylor.
Megadeth guru Dave Mustaine was the lead guest on last night’s episode of ‘That Metal Show’ (Dec. 3). He spoke about having to have neck surgery, which almost cost the band its appearance at the Big Four show in New York in September. Mustaine soldiered on with the heart of a champion and played through the pain. He has had the surgery, is feeling better and even showed the scar last night. How metal!
Darren Aronofsky, the director of redemption-themed, Oscar-nominated films such as ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Black Swan,’ got behind the camera to shoot the video for the Lou Reed and Metallica single ‘The View.’ While the Loutallica collaboration, which yielded the ‘Lulu’ album, has been the subject of much criticism and even lower sales, Aronofsky breathed new artistic life into the project with this visually arresting black and white video.
Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujilio appeared with Lou Reed on the French show, ‘Taratata,’ which aired on Nov. 25. The episode was taped on Nov. 9, and in addition to the trio sitting down to field questions about and discuss their collaborative ‘Lulu’ album, the band and Reed performed two songs from the record.
VH1 Classic has affirmed its commitment to metal with ‘That Metal Show’ going strong for nine seasons and the newly launched ‘Metal Evolution’ documentary which is now airing each Saturday night, taking an anthropological look at the genesis and development of the genre. Now, the network has announced that it will dip into the vault and air ‘Behind the Music Remastered: Anthrax‘ on Dec. 3 at 9 PM ET.
Red Hot Chili Peppers are transformed into graphic novel characters in the visually arresting video for ‘Monarchy of Roses,’ the second single off the band’s latest album ‘I’m With You.’ The vid, directed by Marc Klasfeld, is all black and white, with the only splash of color coming from the roses mentioned in the title, all of which fly around on the screen.
The ninth season of VH1 Classic’s ‘That Metal Show’ will launch on National Metal Day (11-11-11) and it kicks off with the biggest of all “gets” in terms of interviews, as Guns N’ Roses singer W. Axl Rose sat down with the hosts for an early morning chat a few weeks back.
It’s Axl Rose‘s world and we all just live in it and play by his rules, even in 2011. Apparently, the temperamental and interview-shy Rose, who is famous for his tardiness and doing things on his clock and whenever the hell he feels like it, granted an hour-long interview to Eddie Trunk of VH1 Classic’s ‘That Metal Show’ in the wee hours of this morning (Oct. 30). The interview took place at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Fla., around 7 in the morning!
