El Paso School Ranked Nationally
El Paso's Harmony Science Academy is a "Gold Medal" winner in "U.S. News and World Report's" latest high school rankings. The magazine examined 29-thousand schools across the country, choosing Harmony as the 32nd best in Texas and the 168th best, nationally. The rankings are based, in part, on the fact that 72-percent of Harmony's seniors are considered to be well prepared for college.
Regents To Discuss Admissions Dispute
The University of Texas Board of Regents meets today to discuss an internal dispute over student records. Regent Wallace Hall wants to see the records, to determine whether some students were admitted to UT-Austin even though they didn't meet the admission standards. But school administrators have refused to turn over the records. Yesterday, Attorney General Ken Paxton appeared to side with Hall.
Las Cruces Schools Consider Cutbacks
The Las Cruces School Board will vote this month on a plan to cut more than 3-million dollars from its budget for the upcoming school year. Most of the savings would come from employee furloughs. But Superintendent Stan Rounds says the proposal also includes larger class sizes.
El Paso Electric Proposing Rate Hike
The El Paso Electric Company says it needs a rate hike to cover the costs of replaced equipment. The utility is proposing a nine-percent increase for its customers in New Mexico. Any increase would have to be approved by the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission, something that wouldn't happen until next year, at the earliest.
Crane Crashes Into Apartment
An El Paso woman has been forced from her apartment, by a crane. A contractor was using the crane to install an air conditioner yesterday when the heavy equipment accidentally crashed through her wall. She and her young daughter are both okay and they've been moved to another apartment.
