35 Cases Positive For Tuberculosis

The number of positive cases of tuberculosis at an El Paso elementary school is now at 35.  Department of Public Health officials yesterday confirmed the positive tests at Frank Macias Elementary School after testing 149 students and eight teachers.  Health officials say the 2nd graders may have been exposed to the bacterial disease in June.

Halfway House Investigated For More TB Cases

In addition to positive tuberculosis cases at an El Paso elementary school, the Department of Public Health says about 200 adults may have been exposed to an active case of tuberculosis in a separate breakout at a halfway house.  The halfway house investigation is under way at Dismas Charities, in the seven-thousand block of Alameda Avenue.  Results are expected to be in by next week.

Budget Talks Continue At El Paso City Hall

Voters May Get Vote On City Officials Salary Increase

El Paso voters may be get a chance to vote on salary increases for city representatives and the mayor.  A city committee has recommended asking voters in November to approve the increases.  Under the proposal, the mayor's salary would go from $45,000 to $55,000 a year.  A city representative's salary would go from $29,000 to $39,000 a year.

Congressman Tries Again To Legalize Online Poker

A Texas congressman is going all in while trying to make online poker legal in America.  Republican Representative Joe Barton, has for a third time filed the Internet Poker Freedom Act to legalize online poker and to give individual states the opportunity to decide on their own whether to allow it.  The "Star-Telegram" in Fort Worth reports Barton's proposal is already facing strong opposition, including a proposal that would eliminate all types of online gambling, including poker.
